Chiropractic Care to Help Keep Life in Motion

At Active Health Collective, chiropractic care is focused on helping patients understand and address concerns affecting their movement, function, and everyday activities.

Whether pain began suddenly, developed gradually, or is interfering with work, recreation, sport, or daily life, our chiropractors take the time to assess what is happening and develop an individualized approach to care.

Formerly Active Chiropractic, our Edmonton clinic continues to provide chiropractic care as a core service within the expanded Active Health Collective team.

What Is Chiropractic Care?

Chiropractic is a regulated health profession focused on the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of conditions affecting the musculoskeletal system.

Chiropractic care may include a variety of techniques depending on the patient’s needs, findings, and treatment goals. While spinal and joint manipulation or mobilization may form part of treatment, chiropractic care can also involve soft tissue techniques, movement recommendations, exercise, and patient education.

At Active Health Collective, your care begins with an assessment so your chiropractor can better understand your concern and determine an appropriate course of treatment.

When Should You See a Chiropractor?

People visit a chiropractor for many different reasons. Some are experiencing a new injury or sudden pain, while others are dealing with recurring discomfort, restricted movement, or concerns that have developed over time.

If you’re unsure whether chiropractic care is appropriate for your concern, an assessment can help determine what may be contributing to your symptoms and whether chiropractic treatment is suitable.

Patients may seek chiropractic assessment for concerns involving:

  • Back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Headaches
  • Joint pain or stiffness
  • Muscle and soft tissue concerns
  • Sports and activity-related injuries
  • Work-related strains
  • Restricted mobility
  • Repetitive strain concerns
  • Pregnancy-related musculoskeletal discomfort

Meet Dr. Michael Burns

Chiropractic Care with Rehabilitation in Mind

Dr. Michael Burns is part of the chiropractic team at Active Health Collective and brings a movement and rehabilitation-focused approach to patient care.

Rather than focusing only on where a patient is experiencing symptoms, Dr. Mike considers movement, function, and the individual factors that may be contributing to the concern.

Active Health Collective also has a full-time kinesiologist, Curtis Talabong, BKin, providing therapeutic exercise and rehabilitation within the clinic. This gives patients convenient access to movement and exercise-based rehabilitation when appropriate to their care.

What to Expect at Your First Chiropractic Appointment

Your first visit begins with a conversation about your health history, current concerns, symptoms, activities, and what brought you to Active Health Collective. Your chiropractor will ask questions relevant to your concern to better understand your needs and determine what should be assessed.
Your chiropractor will perform an examination based on your individual concern. This may include appropriate physical, orthopaedic, neurological, movement, or other clinical assessments to help determine a diagnosis and appropriate next steps.
Not every patient requires diagnostic imaging. When clinically warranted, chiropractors can refer patients for diagnostic imaging such as X-rays, CT scans, MRI, bone scans, or bone densitometry.
Your chiropractor will discuss the findings from your history and examination, explain your diagnosis where one can be established, and review the treatment or management options that may be appropriate.

If your concern is not appropriate for chiropractic management, referral to another healthcare provider may be recommended.

If chiropractic treatment is appropriate, your chiropractor will discuss the recommended approach with you. Treatment may include spinal or joint adjustments, soft tissue techniques, ShockWave Therapy, IMS (dry needling), Graston, KinTape, Decompression, physical therapies, or other chiropractic techniques based on your individual needs.

Active Health Collective’s Dr. Sheppard offers different approaches, including low-force and Activator adjusting techniques. (Offered by Dr. Sheppard only.)

Depending on your needs, your chiropractor may recommend exercises, stretches, activity modifications, or other strategies to support your care between appointments.
Follow-up appointments are guided by your diagnosis, treatment plan, and response to care. Your chiropractor may reassess your symptoms or movement as needed, discuss your progress, and adjust your treatment approach based on how you are responding.

More Than Chiropractic Available in One Location

Sometimes a patient’s needs extend beyond one type of service.

Active Health Collective has expanded beyond the clinic formerly known as Active Chiropractic to offer a broader range of health and rehabilitation services in one Edmonton location.

The availability of multiple services in one clinic makes it easier for patients to learn about different care options without assuming that every patient requires the same approach.

Chiropractic Care & Rehabilitation

Movement and exercise can be important components of recovery and maintaining physical function.

Active Health Collective’s full-time kinesiologist, Curtis Talabong, holds a Bachelor of Kinesiology from the University of Alberta and provides therapeutic exercise and rehabilitation services within the clinic.

Curtis guides patients through individualized exercises and rehabilitation programs with a focus on movement, strength, conditioning, and physical function.

Where appropriate, chiropractic care and kinesiology may both form part of a patient’s broader care at Active Health Collective.

Dr. Burns & Curtis work together to provide an elevated chiropractic experience. Dr. Burns believes that by incorporating a kinesiologist into his appointments at no additional cost, his patients are able to receive the best care available.
