Custom Foot Orthotics at Active Health Collective

Your feet provide the foundation for how you stand, walk, work, exercise, and move throughout the day. When foot mechanics or support needs contribute to discomfort or difficulty with movement, custom orthotics may be one option to consider.

Active Health Collective offers custom orthotics in Edmonton, individually selected and fitted based on an assessment of your needs, movement, and foot mechanics.

What Are Custom Orthotics?

Custom orthotics are individually made inserts designed to be worn inside your footwear.

Unlike standard over-the-counter insoles, custom orthotics are created based on an assessment and measurements specific to the individual. Their design can provide targeted support or accommodate particular biomechanical needs.

The type of orthotic recommended depends on factors such as your foot mechanics, symptoms, activities, footwear, and assessment findings.

Why Might Someone Consider Custom Orthotics?

People seek orthotics for a variety of reasons, from persistent foot discomfort to concerns related to standing, walking, work, or physical activity.

Depending on your individual assessment, custom orthotics may be considered for concerns involving:

  • Foot or heel discomfort
  • Plantar heel pain
  • Arch-related concerns
  • Certain ankle concerns
  • Foot mechanics while standing or walking
  • Uneven or excessive shoe wear
  • Discomfort associated with prolonged standing
  • Activity-related foot concerns
  • The need for additional support in work or everyday footwear

Foot, ankle, knee, hip, and back symptoms can have many different causes. An assessment helps determine whether foot mechanics may be relevant and whether custom orthotics are an appropriate option.

Custom Orthotics Designed for the Individual

There is no single orthotic design that is appropriate for everyone.

An effective orthotic begins with understanding the person who will be wearing it. Your practitioner considers your symptoms, activities, footwear, and relevant assessment findings before determining whether an orthotic is recommended and what type of support may be appropriate.

The goal is not simply to add cushioning to a shoe, but to provide an orthotic suited to your individual needs.

What to Expect from a Custom Orthotics Assessment

Your appointment begins with a discussion about why you’re considering orthotics, including any discomfort you’re experiencing, activities that affect your symptoms, and the types of footwear you regularly use.

Your practitioner will assess relevant aspects of your feet and movement to better understand your individual needs. Our orthotics are made from a 3D mold/cast, along with an analysis of your movement, combined with our clinical knowledge to correct your movement from the ground up.

If custom orthotics are appropriate, the information gathered during your assessment is used to create an individualized pair.

It typically it takes 3 weeks for custom orthotics to be made.

Once your orthotics are ready, your practitioner can ensure they fit appropriately and provide instructions for introducing them into your regular footwear.

Because your body may need time to adjust to a new orthotic, following the recommended break-in schedule is important.

Custom Orthotics for Work, Sport & Everyday Life

Different activities place different demands on your feet.

Someone who spends an entire workday standing may have different footwear and support needs than a runner, recreational athlete, or someone primarily looking for greater comfort during everyday activities.

When recommending custom orthotics, factors such as your usual footwear and the activities you need to perform can be considered as part of the process.

If you rely on safety footwear, athletic shoes, dress shoes, or other specialized footwear, let your practitioner know during your assessment.
